e exhibition "I (am)" by the Polish artist Paweł Althamer at the Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) was opened on March 28 and will last until September 8, 2019. The exhibition is co-organized with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Helsinki.

Pirkko Siitari, curator and exhibition director at the Helsinki Art Museum, was the initiator of the Polish artist's exhibition at HAM and a person directly involved in the selection of Paweł Althamer's works "I (am)" . She prepared a large retrospective summarizing Paweł's achievements of the last 30 years of his creativity. The exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) is the first individual exhibition of P. Althamer in the Nordic countries. P. Siitari emphasizes that - "Works of Paweł Althamer, including his community that engages in public space, is very much in line with our actions".

The exhibition was composed of two parts. The first consists of sculptures, video works and documentation of his performances from the last three decades. In the second part, what Paweł Althamer called the new area, is a white space - an interactive space, that the artist creates together with the audience. The creativity of this space, which is based on the method of Althamer's "directing reality" is his desire to connect with other people and with himself. He treats art and sculpture as a tool for social transformation. The artist participates in a special program with the local community. In Helsinki, the so-called group He was found in the district of Jakomäki - a district a few kilometers from the center of Helsinki - where HAM has been actively cooperating with the local community for years. Parked nearby HAM, the golden bus is always ready for travel. The artist wants to share his life and artistic experience with the youngest, whose fates are not always perfectly arranged and are considered to be challenging. He takes a group of young people by golden bus to his exhibition at HAM, and above all he stays with them. “The journey itself is a goal”- Paweł Althamer believes. Among the events accompanying the exhibition there were, among others: review of Polish films curated by Althamer. The program includes: the fairy tale "Uszatek Miś", "Iluminacja" by Krzysztof Zanussi, "Pianista" by Roman Polański, "Dzieje grzechu" by Walerian Borowczyk, "Seksmisja" by Juliusz Machulski. Pirkko Siitari informs that Grzegorz Kowalski - teacher of Polish artist and a professor of Althamer's diploma work at Academy, will appear at the exhibition.

"I (am)". The title of the exhibition embodies the basic questions that Paweł Althamer puts in his art. Who am I? Who are we all together? Cooperation is a key element of Althamer's artistic activity. In the process of creating his works, the artist regularly includes his family, neighbors, visitors to museums, as well as people who are not art receivers and participants of cultural events on a daily basis "- comments the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

A book documenting the exhibition will be released in May.

Paweł Althamer was born on May 12, 1967 in Warsaw. Sculptor, performer, creator of installations and videos. He obtained his diploma from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He exhibited his works in the most important galleries and museums of New York, Berlin, Vienna and Paris.
